parachute jump
The Parachute Jump is a defunct amusement ride in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, whose iconic open-frame steel structure remains a Brooklyn landmark. 262 feet (80 m) tall and weighing 170 tons (150 tonnes), it has been called the “Eiffel Tower of Brooklyn”. It was built for the 1939 New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, and moved to its current site, then part of the Steeplechase Park amusement park, in 1941. It is the only portion of Steeplechase Park still standing today. The ride ceased operations in 1968. The ride was based on functional parachutes which were held open by metal rings throughout the ascent and descent. Twelve cantilevered steel arms sprout from the top of the tower, each of which supported a parachute attached to a lift rope and a set of surrounding guide cables. Riders were belted into a two-person canvas seat hanging below the closed chute, then hoisted to the top, where a release mechanism would drop them, the descent slowed only by the parachute. Shock absorbers at the bottom, consisting of pole-mounted springs, cushioned the landing. Each parachute required three cable operators, keeping labor expenses high.
..sunday..
..view this in mono..
..i honestly was just taking a shot of the trash can.. ;D
..time to meditate.. here’s a pair of yogis doing yoga on the boardwalk..
..unless you won’t give me nom noms..
..the best place to put your ads..
..it’s summer, so here are some kids playing volleyball at the beach..
..went on a chilly walk down coney island’s boardwalk to see for our very own eyes if astroland was indeed closed.. what greeted us was a dimly lit astroland, with couples lounging on the benches, cyclists getting their evening wisp of fresh air, and joggers doggedly running for whatever reasons they may have.. the sky also seemed to tune in to astroland’s mood, a bloody red & black cape slowly creeping up and enveloping the former jewel of coney island..
cooped up at home has it’s perks.. i got to catch up on some surfing.. and not a moment too soon! because there was these rumors spreading around about those new cams from Nikon & Canon, and true enough, Canon’s website confirmed that the 50D (ISO 12800!!) would be available soon.. (my 40D is just a few months old) the horror.. the horror.. well, this might be a significant upgrade for those of you using pre 40D’s ( 30D, 20D & 10D(?) ).. Nikon’s supposed D90 on the other hand.. they said it’s been pulled from the Circuit City ad, but it has GPS geotagging?! HD video?! wtf?!
dpreview -> 50D
dpreview -> D90 (not a rumor anymore)
and no, this guy wasn’t a panhandler.. he’s actually pretty good.. 🙂
Taking a break on a bench after a long walk.. turned around and voila.. a rainbow! 😀
..a perfect place to clear your mind..
A final photo from the parade.. A guy in a blue fish costume..
Still from the parade.. this guy opted to look like a barnacle-encrusted abomination.. which seemed to suit him quite well..
On a sidenote, this guy was also running around scaring kids with his mask. (Quite funny if you ask me..)
A sea urchin perhaps? Who knows.. the first thought that comes to my mind is S&M.. 😀
i’m thinking of making this week’s theme about the “freaks” at the Mermaid Parade.. hmm..
More freaks! Out from the depths of the ocean, here comes Godzilla!
Alluding to the fact that this guy is Asian, and wearing what looks like (..to me) a dinosaur costume, I deduced that he’s portraying Godzilla.. or maybe a blue Barney?? Whatever he is, he’s rockin’ it.. rawr!
A bit of Godzilla trivia:
“Godzilla” Gojira (ゴジラ) is a combination of two Japanese words: gorira (ゴリラ lit. “gorilla”) and kujira (鯨 (ãã˜ã‚‰) lit. “whale”)
It’s that time of the year.. the temperature’s climbing.. hemlines are climbing.. the freaks are out again.. To signal the start of summer, it’s the Mermaid Parade! whee!!
Get your dose of the parade here –> NSFW
(Ooops! I tripped!) I’m guessing that this shell will be the first thing you see after falling flat on your face while strolling the beach.

Merry Christmas to all! As always, the holiday season is an excuse to satiate some of our worldly desires. What better way to celebrate the holidays by stuffing your mouth full of hot dogs no? Bon Apetit!
