gt 350

..a 1969/1970 Shelby GT350..

Carroll Shelby terminated his agreement with Ford in the summer of 1969. The GT350 and GT500 for the 1969–70 model years received extensive face lifts, the body alone increasing in length by 4 inches (100 mm). Ford was heavily involved with design and style decisions, with Shelby having very little input. The GT350 was now equipped with a 351 cubic-inch V8. Production of Shelby Mustangs ceased with the 1970 model year. The 1970 models were in fact left over 1969 models.(wiki)

plymouth

..as mentioned, here’s the first of a few images from the car show.. it’s a classic car show competition, if you’re a fan of vintage cars then you’ll love these.. i’ll have close up, detailed shots of these cars up here and the rest (300+) i’ll dump on my flickr..

..here’s a plymouth hood ornament, forgot to get the car info, i’m guessing something in the 1938-1941’s..

The Plymouth automobile was introduced on July 7, 1928. It was the Chrysler Corporation’s first entry in the low-priced field, which at the time was dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. Plymouths were actually priced a little higher than the competition, but they offered standard features such as internal expanding hydraulic brakes that the competition did not provide. Plymouths were originally sold exclusively through Chrysler dealerships. The logo featured a rear view of the Mayflower ship which landed at Plymouth Rock. However, the Plymouth brand name came from Plymouth Binder Twine, chosen by Joe Frazer for its popularity among farmers.(wiki)

golden orb weaver

..still using a regular flash gun here, tilted in some contorted way just to illuminate the subject.. framing’s not topnotch because i was manual focusing while tiptoeing.. was a bit edgy too because this looked like a nasty spider and i wasn’t aware if it gave a nasty bite or not.. turns out they do.. 😀

The golden silk orb-weavers (genus Nephila) are a genus of spiders noted for the impressive webs they weave. Nephila consists of numerous individual species found around the world. They are also commonly called golden orb-weavers, giant wood spiders or banana spiders. In North America, the golden silk orb-weavers (see also Nephila clavipes) are sometimes referred to as writing spiders due to occasional zigzag patterns (stabilimenta) built into their webs, though these occur much more frequently in the webs of Argiope, such as the St Andrew’s Cross spider. cef2bah5sk

..a new category has been added here called macro.. i’ve been leaning towards doing macro now because i’ve not much to shoot here nowadays especially when i can’t roam around the place a lot.. but we do have a lake here and a fair amount of trees and bushes to explore so let’s see where that’ll lead me..

..so far, for shooting bugs 1:1, i found it difficult to shoot in available light because of the limited DOF, so i’ve created a DIY ring light and it looks promising (i haven’t used it on this spider though, it’s just your regular flash)..

..here’s a 100% crop of mr. spider..

big guns

..it’s the first time i’ve been up close with these kinds of ships so bear with me as i post more from the trip.. ;P

USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth completed ship named Alabama of the United States Navy, however she was only the third commissioned ship with that name. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. She retired in 1962. In 1964, Alabama was taken to Mobile Bay and opened as a museum ship the following year. The ship was added to the National Historic Landmark registry in 1986.

..if you’re a fan of these ships (or just like to gawk at them), i suggest you swing by Hess site, he’s doing a series on USS Lexington.. we’re having a “gun show”.. 😀

bee hive

..back to government street.. here’s a church named ‘the bee hive’..

The congregation of Government Street United Methodist Church, Methodism’s Mother Church in Mobile, began in 1826 on Franklin Street. Called “The Bee Hive” because of it’s activity, it sent “swarms” throughout the city to form new congregations. A brick structure replaced the original wooden church in 1848-49. The move to this corner was accomplished with the dedication of a Gothic structure in 1890. The remodeling to Spanish Colonial architecture was begun in 1906 and completed in 1917. Architect was Mobilian George B. Rogers, and Harry E. Goodhue of Boston created the stained glass windows.

rsa battle house tower

..okay, i’ll get back to those old houses later.. my interest fades when i post in succession anyways.. so for now i’ll be jumping straight to downtown Mobile..

..while walking the empty streets of downtown Mobile, the wind from the gulf created these interesting cloud formations.. the backdrop just looks so interesting i can’t help but post more of these.. well, maybe.. we’ll see.. it all depends on my mood..

..from wikipedia

The RSA Battle House Tower is located in Mobile, Alabama and is Alabama’s tallest building. The building is owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). It is the tallest on the Gulf Coast of the United States outside of Houston, Texas. It replaces the Wachovia Building in Birmingham as the tallest building in Alabama and the AmSouth Bank Building as the tallest in Mobile. The building is named for the neighboring Battle House Hotel, which is now part of the tower complex. The Battle House Hotel was restored and renovated as part of the the tower project.

..walking down the sidewalk with nary a soul in sight and surrounded by these southern houses got me thinking about scenes of Anne Rice’s ‘Witching Hour’.. as curious as i am about these houses, i just stuck to the sidewalk for fear of Lasher, the pervy antagonist in Anne Rice’s book.. 😀

blacksher hall

..a particular stretch of road leading into downtown Mobile is Government Street.. it’s lined on both sides with **okay, get ready for this** “antebellum architectural examples of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Creole cottage, various Victorian types, shotgun types, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Beaux-Arts and many others..” **whew, that’s a mouthful.. got that from wikipedia**

..one such specimen is the Blacksher Hall.. (from their website)
