tribute in light

..the twin beams of ‘tribute in light’ returned yesterday for a one night tribute to all those lost on 9/11 as well as those who worked in its aftermath.. the lights were located at West & Morris streets in Lower Manhattan, was on since sunset up until dawn this morning.. a plethora of people came out in droves to witness it yet again, including a BUNCH of photographers shown here..

epcot

EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) – lifted off from wikipedia:

Epcot is a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort. The park is dedicated to international culture and technological innovation. The second park built at the resort, it opened on October 1, 1982 and was named EPCOT Center until 1994.

In 2007 Epcot hosted approximately 10.93 million guests, ranking it the third-most visited theme park in the United States, and sixth-most visited in the world.

for anyone planning to go anywhere in disneyland, i’d suggest you bring a tripod or some sort of support because when dusk approaches, that’s when the fun starts.. i didn’t bring one because i figured that i’d have much more fun without lugging some stuff around.. hehe..

bow down to no one

as a follow up to the “ny faux” post i did the other day, today’s post is about the real thing.. this here’s the flatiron building.. as you can see, the empire & the chrysler are nowhere in sight.. that is because, they’re behind me.. so that my friends, are some of the buildings in manhattan.. here’s an interesting description about manhattan from a commenter @ gawker:

“It is a complex miasma of longstanding social and economic gentrification; of people, regular and celebrity, of various races and ethnicities choosing to remain sequestered from one another, except during the hours between 9am and 5pm, or when they get their Chinese food delivered; of hot dog carts parked next to falafel carts parked next to storefront Wendys and Starbucks, creating a wonderfully malodorous assault on one’s senses, and possibly killing them; of the media elite and the blogging underclass, and vice versa, of course; of traffic and pigeons and sometime smells of caramel or fudge or swamp gas wafting in from New Jersey; of layoffs at newspapers, TV anchors under layers of makeup and radio reporters acting like the days of the week are ‘dress-down Fridays’; of sidewalk vendors selling goods you’d rather not know, or acknowledge, weren’t and will never be ‘the real thing’; of tall buildings that spit debris onto unwitting pedestrians below, and pedestrians that spit; and, above all, of triumph in love, of love in triumph, of all things ever thought romantic and tragic, right and wrong in the affairs of the heart. That, my child, is Manhattan, a floe of schist in humanity’s complex sea, and never, my child, shall we tramp there.”

As a result of boredom during the first and only MLB game I attended, I paid homage to the hotdog.. ( and soda.. and beer.. and m&ms.. and chips.. )

On a sidenote, watching Yankee fans bickering with Red Sox fans was far more amusing than the game. 😉

Empire?!

Can you guess what this building is? The first time I saw this building I gave it a second glance & thought it was the Empire State Building. Actually, this is the American International Building. It’s home to the American International Group, an insurance company. The observatory at the top is still used (if you’re an executive, that is).

Got this shot while lounging at a recently opened park at the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Roofed

NY may be a pricey place to stay but some things are free.. Unknown by some, museums sometimes allow free admission or a voluntary donation. Say for example, The Met.. the three of us were able to get in for just a buck.

This is the rooftop of The Met, it was a Friday so people were guzzling booze & shooting the crap.

Capitol

Looky what we got here.. It’s the US Capitol’s dome..
Taken on a weekend Memorial Weekend tour..

The United States Capitol is the capitol building that serves as the seat of government for the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. It is located in Washington, D.C., on top of Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall. Although not in the geographic center of the District of Columbia, the Capitol is the focus by which the quadrants of the district are divided. Officially, the east and west sides of the Capitol are referred to as “fronts”. Historically, however, the east front was initially the side of the building intended for the arrival of visitors and dignitaries.

The New York State Pavilion, constructed as the state’s exhibit hall for the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair, is also a feature of the Flushing Meadows Park. However, no new use for the building was found after the Fair and the structure sits derelict and decaying.

Observatory Towers

A relic of the New York World’s Fair, towering over Flushing Meadows is the twin Observatory Towers of the New York State Pavilion. In the decades after the Fair closed it remains an abandoned and badly neglected relic of the Fair, with its roof gone the once bright floors and walls are almost faded away. If you’ve seen Men In Black, then you might remember the alien they call a Bug climbing one of the towers.

Unisphere

As taken from Wikipedia.

Unisphere is a 12-story high, spherical stainless steel representation of the Earth. Located in Flushing Meadows Park in the Borough of Queens, New York City, the Unisphere is one of the Borough’s most iconic and enduring symbols.

The Unisphere, commissioned to celebrate the beginning of the space age, was conceived and constructed as the Theme Symbol of the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair. The Theme of the World’s Fair was “Peace Through Understanding” and the Unisphere represented the theme of global interdependence. It was dedicated to “Man’s Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe.”

New Yorker

So, a while ago, I went out & took a boat to New Jersey to get a different perspective of Manhattan. I walked south from Port Imperial along the waterfront when I spied a 100-foot stairway zigzagging against the cliff. Thinking that a better view could be seen from atop the stairway, I ventured further. Although a bit out of breath from the climb, the view was astounding! I was thinking “Boy, these Weehawkens (or whatever they’re called) have it good!”.

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

Waking up later than usual after recuperating from yesterday’s travels, my thoughts swayed from going to the Verrazano Bridge & laying down in bed owning the remote. As this post shows, the former whim prevailed.

The reasons for procrastination were several things: (1) I was watching a Laker game (they won!) (2) It felt cold outside. (3) If I stayed till dusk, am I going to get mugged?! And lastly ->(3) That bridge (like all other stuff here in NY) has been “shot” to death.

The thing that swayed me to go is only because I haven’t been there.

As it turned out, it wasn’t that cold. There were at least some people when the last rays of light disappeared. And I counted 2 guys with SLRs & tripods (They probably were thinking what I was thinking. 🙂 )

Anyways, here’s the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the largest suspension bridge in America. Read more about it here.
