..looks like an ashtray, no?

..another Enfuse experiment, a three-shot blend.. it still strips the exif but i was able to salvage it by adding the original layer under it.. took about 3-5 seconds to process 3 images, so it’s pretty fast.. no auto align feature yet, so had to do it in PS.. it does exhibit a bit of “halo-ing”..have to read up more about it..

big fishy

..i’m pretty much threatened by any fish bigger than a foot swimming beside me, and as tempted as i was to take a dip,  with no one in sight, i thought it prudent to stay clear of the water.. 😀 who knows, a shark might have been lurking down there too.. i think i’ve been watching too much shark week..

Most people don’t know it, but sharks are extremely common in Bermuda’s waters. The good news is that sharks on the whole, and especially the ones found around Bermuda, are extremely harmless creatures which rarely come close to the shore. More often than not, sharks will try and avoid direct contact with humans.

The most abundant types found around Bermuda are the Galapagos and dusky sharks, both noted for being particularly passive. The last reported shark attack in Bermuda was a minor incident over 30 years ago. ()

biloxi lighthouse

..walking westwards towards the biloxi lighthouse and saw these funny looking birds (i can’t name them) staring out at the sea.. the funny thing was that while approaching them, one bird (the leader, i suppose) would quack or squalk..or whatever birds do, and tell the others that an intruder is approaching them, so they would take to the air one by one (like a sheet of cloth) and slowly land farther away from me (again, like a sheet of cloth).. this went on for about 15 minutes, and i was still thinking of a way to capture the “flow”.. (**i’ve added an extra crappy post below of what i was trying to achieve) well, i gave up and screwed in a telephoto and ended up with this one instead..

twilight

..i’m a big fan of anne rice’s vampire chronicles and have even read bram stoker’s dracula (who hasn’t?).. so, i’ve read a bunch of stuff in a gossip blog (gawker.com) about this new vampire book series (twilight) that has been generating a lot of buzz and selling like hotcakes.. the film adaptation of the first book was even a blockbuster this weekend, so despite the bad reviews, i decided to read the books first.. one gawker’s take on the movie was a bit close to what i thought it was (some excerpts below) but i’m already halfway through the series, so i might as well finish it..

Let’s get the obvious, probably-the-cold-bare-truth one out of the way. There’s nothing new about young people, young women especially, going apeshit bananas over something that brings a fierce yet chaste smolder to their loins—be it the cherubic young matinee idols like Romeo + Juliet-era Leonardo DiCaprio, the crotch-twirling “baby come back” antics of a boy band (from Beatles to Backstreet), or, you know, the dark brooding eternal prick tease of sexless vampire love (Buffy! And now, sigh, Twilight!). While most boys just hairy palm their way past longings for love and post-in/out/in/out intimacy, many girls get snared and tangled in that brambly bush of idol worship, and any conduit through which they can explore and advance these tinglings is.. read more here

..okay, shooting startrails.. google would be a good start, that’s what i did.. here‘s a nice one.. compared to my last post, this was 38 (4 minute exposures) with a 2 second interval, totaling 2 hrs & 32 mins in 28 degrees temperature.. probably getting a dc adapter / extra batteries would have me shooting more and posting some later but for now, this is as far as my battery would go..

polaris

..here’s the story about the botched job that i was talking about yesterday.. just got bored and tried shooting stars last night, after seeing the first long exposure (5 mins), polaris was right smack in the middle of the frame! whee!! so i tried tweaking the settings and did a 50 minute exposure.. that didn’t turn out too well, in fact, it sucked (because of light pollution) so i decided to try plan B tonight.. after two tries, here’s what 184 exposures looks like in 82 minutes.. overkill? i think not, i was gunning for 400 shots, but my battery gave out.. i know the foreground’s not interesting but, heck, it’s 47 degrees outside, i didn’t wanna risk having my already inflamed sinuses out in that kind of climate.. but i admit, shooting star trails is fun!! 😀

Paranoia

Pretty weird title for this post huh? Well, hear me out. From the moment you get a brand-spankin’ new gadget like your dSLR, you treat it so delicately & gingerly, to the point the wifey looks at you in a weird way. And then you read some bad stuff and hope yours doesn’t have it. This shot was from a few months back when I read about dust bunnies. I shot a bunch of these just to test if I had them.. looks clean.. (or so it seems)

NY may be a pricey place to stay but some things are free.. Unknown by some, museums sometimes allow free admission or a voluntary donation. Say for example, The Met.. the three of us were able to get in for just a buck.

Telectroscope

A weird steampunk sculpture erupted underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the bridge, this structure was put up. It looks like a cannon poised to blast Manhattan..

The Telectroscope (linking New York and London)

Hardly anyone knows that a secret tunnel runs deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean. In May 2008, more than a century after it was begun, the tunnel has finally been completed. An extraordinary optical device called a Telectroscope has been installed at both ends which miraculously allows people to see right through the Earth from London to New York
and vice versa.

Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is a large, tall, white-colored obelisk near the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It is a United States Presidential Memorial constructed to commemorate George Washington. The monument is the world’s tallest stone structure, and is the world’s tallest obelisk, standing 555 feet 5â…› inches (169.294 m) in height[1] and made of marble, granite, and sandstone. It was designed by Robert Mills, an architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect’s death. This hiatus in construction was because of a lack of funds and the intervention of the American Civil War. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (45 m) up, clearly delineates the initial construction from its resumption in 1876.

Hah-vahd Yahd

Mulling over last weekend’s seemingly spontaneous meanderings around Philly, this weekend was a little bit premeditated.. I even bought a travel book! A travel book about Boston! (New York’s rival lol). I even went to Harvard! 🙂
This is Harvard Yard. Supposedly pronounced by locals as “Hahvahd Yahd”. Oddly enough, I haven’t met anyone who spoke like that. Click on the thumbnail below for a larger image of Harvard Yard. Also check out the route I took around Boston, care of RouteBuilder.org.

Cathedral Basilica

After my recent trip to Philly, I now have this impression that it’s full of homeless people. The whole day, I’ve had around 8 guys who approached me asking for spare change. There was also this guy named “Spoon”, who offered me a “free” tour around City Hall. Not wanting to be rude, I went along. I admit though that he knew what he was talking about. I learned a lot during the 5-10 minute walk.

What we have here is the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Read more about it here.

Philly Hall

Today, I decided to venture out of the confines of NY. Disregarding the predicted dismal weather, I chose a place that’s accessible by public transportation & isn’t too vast that I’d need a vehicle (assuming I could drive one. lol). I went to the city of Philadelphia also known as the “City of Brotherly Love”. Below is the route I took while walking around the city. >=D

Shown here is the Philadelphia City Hall with One Liberty Place at the right side. The City Hall is the world’s tallest masonry building. Read more about it after the jump.

Going to Church

This is the LA Cathedral. I’m off to attend my cousin’s wedding. From the I-20 & surrounding streets, this structure doesn’t look impressive at all, but once inside, you get to see & feel the vastness of the complex. Here are some facts & numbers:

  • Designed by Spanish Pritzker Prize architect Rafael Moneo.
  • Features a series of acute and obtuse angles. There is an absence of right angles.
  • Designed with protections from future earthquake structural damage. Every detail of construction was specified to last approximately five hundred years.
  • The site of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is 5.6 acres (23,000 m²) bound by Temple Street, Grand Avenue, Hill Street and the Hollywood Freeway.
  • The 12-story high building can accommodate 3,000+ worshippers.
  • The site includes the cathedral proper, a 2.5 acre (10,000 m²) plaza, several gardens and waterfalls, the Cathedral Center (with the gift shop, the Galero Grill, conference center, and cathedral parish offices), and the cathedral rectory, the residence of Roger Mahony. The entire complex is 58,000 square feet (5,000 m²).
  • The main sanctuary is 333 feet (100 m) long (purposely one foot longer than St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York).
  • This is where Lea Salonga got married. 😉
